The Last Trawl of Old Nell
In 1958, the Harland family sends a trawler down the Humber towards the northern fishing grounds. Built upon years of work, borrowed money and stubborn confidence, Nell carries more than nets and men. She carries the livelihood of a family, the hopes of a port and the belief that honest work will always find its reward.
Arthur Harland knows the sea offers no such promise. Beyond Grimsby lie the rich waters of Iceland and Greenland, the White Sea approaches, and weather capable of turning a profitable voyage into a struggle to bring the crew home. Freezing spray coats the rails, darkness closes over working decks, and a broken wire or failing engine can make the distance from shore seem immeasurable. In the wireless room, Morse signals bring fishing intelligence, warnings and voices upon which lives may depend.
Yet Nell’s story reaches far beyond her wheelhouse. Ashore, women wait, children grow, marriages endure separation, and grief enters houses where supper has been kept warm for a man who will never return. Ellen and Ruth Harland begin building a fish business of their own, learning that the dangers of credit, spoiled deliveries and unpaid accounts can be less visible than a northern gale.
As command passes from Arthur to his son Peter, and to his grandson Thomas, the world surrounding their vessel changes. The Cod Wars bring patrol boats and severed trawl wires. Governments offer assurances while grounds close. European agreements, competing fleets and diminishing catches turn decisions made in distant rooms into hard arithmetic aboard an ageing ship.
For Thomas, loving Nell means confronting questions his grandfather scarcely imagined. How much should a family sacrifice to keep its inheritance working? When does endurance become refusal to admit what has changed? And what remains of a seafaring life when the vessel that shaped it can no longer earn her place?
Inspired by John Shenton’s poem, The Last Trawl of Old Nell follows three generations through storms and rescues, courtship and bereavement, good fishing and bitter returns. It is a novel of working people whose skill and loyalty outlast the promises made to them, and of a family determined to carry something worthwhile into the future.
Across four decades, Nell remains their common ground: the ship they repair, depend upon, quarrel over and love. Her final reckoning will demand more than courage at sea. It will ask what they have built together ashore.
