REFLECTIONS ON A CHANGING WEST

There was a time when the word West required little explanation. It described a civilisation shaped by representative government, the rule of law, freedom of expression, national sovereignty, individual responsibility and the belief that government existed, at least in principle, to serve the citizen.
Those principles were never perfectly applied. Western history contains injustice, hypocrisy and failure. Yet the principles mattered because they provided a standard against which governments could be judged and challenged.
Today that confidence is less certain.
The articles gathered here were written independently, in response to different events, controversies and arguments. They range across citizenship, political language, economics, energy, free speech, religion, immigration, technology, history, maritime power and the growing strategic challenge posed by China. Although varied in subject, they share a common concern: what is happening to the West, and what is it becoming?
